BelliniFoto DF2 Duo-Step aka Liquid Diafine was a revelation and became our product of the year when introduced in 2019…it literally IS Diafine in a bottle!
The true two bath formulation processes highlights and shadows independently, automatically developing all but the slowest speed films to normal levels of contrast without the need to adjust time nor temperature. Higher contrast situations can be mellowed by lowering the film speed if so desired.
One of the things you will find with BelliniFoto Duo-Step aka Liquid Diafine is that it’s pretty indesctructable…it goes on and on and can be replenished to go on and on even longer!
We recommend the 2x 500ml set for 35mm users although we have found it will cover a limited number of 120 films until Part A reduces with use…
For higher volume and Medium Format users we suggest the 2x One Litre set
With usage Part A depletes and acquires contaminants from the films it develops, it will appear off-colour due to dissolved anti-halation materials and debris will appear and Part B, will get over-conditioned by the cross contamination by the ingress of Part A during processing.
For this we have introduced the replenisher Duo-Step R which will enable you to extend the life of each by 8 -12 films or so (depending on state of existing dev which is dependent on other factors!)
Make this up to 500ml for each part then add 500ml from the corresponding used parts to make up to one litre and carry on! It is perfectly fine to filter the used developer should you so wish.

I have to admit I was sceptical that there was a black & white developer out there that didn’t care about temp, lasted for ages, and also didn’t care about developing times. Being able to chuck FP125 into the same tank as pushed HP5 for the same time, and get good results was an absolute boon. For films where the developing times are less readily available, or if the film is heavily expired, this developer is also great. And recently, after a few too many beers at a wedding, I ended up with 3 rolls of Tri-X and no clue what ISO I shot them at. All came out fine in this stuff.
There are downsides. It doesn’t work as well as other developers for TMAX P3200 and I haven’t tested it on other T Grain films (mainly because I don’t shoot them) so I’m guessing it’s not perfect for every film. Although I have tried this with all the Washi films, Konica 750, Kodak HIE, Maco Eagle IR, and my main Tri-X and HP5 films with excellent results, Also, with one development time, it’s impossible to control contrast in development by (traditional) pull/push methods.
Considering it never goes off, it’s well worth having some in the cupboard for the times when you can’t get a reliable development time for your normal dev/film combination, and for that time you see a cheap bulk roll of something odd or expired and don’t really know how to develop it.
One final lifesaver for me was when I accidentally put 300ml of liquid in for a 120 film (should have been 500ml!), half developed before realising my mistake, then just tipped it away, washed it, and redeveloped with Duo-Step. There was only minor evidence of my mess up in the resulting negatives.
Excellent stuff.
