John Hedgecoe’s Introductory Photography Course ~ Hardback 1979 – 1983
This is the book I was presented with when I were a lad and expected to take part later in the family trade….as a hard-core non-academic I liked this volume, I know there are plenty of others about but this one is nicest.
John delivers stuff in nicely written short bursts of information and sample photos that take the grind away from learning photography, not just film photography as these lessons are universal and haven’t changed in the slightest.
Of course it is of it’s day but that is the photographic place so many want to be in now, he’ll take you through types of cameras, types of films, basic exposure practices and so on. He will even take you into the darkroom with lessons in how to process film, how to make prints and even how to dodge and burn….
Atop all that he’ll inspire you with some nice projects to have a go at, for when you can’t think of something…use these and learn and enjoy.
I often get asked if offer lessons and the answer I always give is just buy this.. I am not the tutor John is and you can’t take me home! This could well be the best £7.50 you can spend on your photography 🙂
John Hedgecoe was a prolific writer of photographic books. A nice chap and a very capable photographer, married to the daughter of the great sculptor Henry Moore….everyone who has seen a UK stamp has seen one of his portraits, he photographed the Queen’s head for the Post Office designers!
