Shanghai Multigrade Resin Coated B&W Photo Papers new from our good friends at Shanghai….High quality medium weight papers that represent fantastic value for money.
We’ve had several guys test these and all were over the moon with them, enjoying the texture of the matt, each delivered fantastic results using paper chemistry by BelliniFoto and Ilford.
All of them want more!
The matt papers are actually erring towards a semi lustre finish with a texture that everyone who’s used them and seen the samples so far have commented on as being pleasing and very lovely.
For me, they’re reminiscent of the papers I used to love back in the 80s.
The guys all reported also that exposure time seemed faster, and development longer than Ilford RC…a good thing if like me you love to manage a print in the dish as much as during exposure.
These papers represent saving over Ilford of roughly 10% which makes them ideal for schools, colleges and community projects as well as in general use by the enthusiastic darkroom print makers out there.

The satin finish has a lovely finish to it, I want to say eggshell with lustre! and the stated medium weight is definately erring towards a heavier paper which adds to its old school feel as well. It is multigrade but unlike the new Ilford MG V paper it reacts to Grade 0 much more than Grade 4 & 5 so when I was split printing I had to adjust my technique a bit to suit. I used a full 10 x 8 sheet to test both grades increasing exposure steps horizontally for grade O and vertically for grade 5 giving a chequered pattern of increasing contrast diagonally. Once you’ve established your exposures the results are lovely tones which with Bellini developer were a neutral/cool black. Definately worth a go with this great product.
